Reflected Ceiling Plan Symbols: A Plain-Language Reference
Every standard RCP symbol described in plain words — lighting, switches, ceiling height tags, diffusers, and life safety — and which standards govern.
A reflected ceiling plan (RCP) shows the ceiling as if the floor were a mirror: you look down at the plan, but you are seeing everything mounted overhead, in the same left-right orientation as the floor plan below it. Because a ceiling has no furniture or casework to orient you, almost all of the information on an RCP is carried by symbols — small circles, rectangles, tags, and dashed lines that stand in for fixtures, devices, and construction.
This page describes each of the common symbols in words, category by category: what the mark typically looks like, what it means, and the variants you are likely to meet. It is written to be read, not downloaded — if you came looking for DWG blocks, there is an honest section on that near the end.
How symbols sit on an RCP
Three placement conventions do a lot of quiet work on a ceiling plan. First, solid linework is at or in the ceiling plane; dashed linework is either hidden above it (cove fixtures, structure) or below it (under-cabinet lights, door swings). Second, fixtures are usually drawn at their real scaled size — a 2×4 troffer is drawn two feet by four feet — so the plan doubles as a coordination check against the ceiling grid. Third, a letter tag next to a fixture (commonly in a hexagon or circle: A, B, C…) keys it to the luminaire schedule, which carries the manufacturer, lamping, and mounting data the plan itself has no room for.

Lighting symbols
Lighting is the reason most RCPs exist, so this is the largest family. The recurring logic: circles for point sources, rectangles for linear fixtures, dashes for anything concealed or below the ceiling plane.

Switch symbols and switch legs
Switches live on walls, but they appear on the RCP (or a lighting plan derived from it) because that is where their fixtures are. The base symbol is a letter 'S' at the wall line, modified by subscripts.

The relationship between a switch and what it controls is drawn as a switch leg: a curved dashed line arcing from the S to each fixture it operates. The curve is deliberate — it keeps switch legs visually distinct from walls and grid lines. On dense plans, offices often drop the arcs entirely and use lowercase letters instead: the switch is marked Sa and every fixture it controls carries a small 'a'. Both systems mean exactly the same thing.
Ceiling construction symbols
The second job of an RCP is describing the ceiling itself — its heights, materials, and level changes. These marks are less standardized than lighting symbols, but the patterns below cover most sheets.

Mechanical symbols
HVAC terminals appear on the architectural RCP for coordination even though their engineering lives on the mechanical sheets. The classic pair to memorize: an X across a square is supply, a single diagonal (or hatching) is return.

Life safety symbols
Life safety devices are the one category with a genuinely authoritative reference: NFPA 170, Standard for Fire Safety and Emergency Symbols (current edition 2024), which standardizes symbols across fire protection and emergency-planning drawings. Architectural RCPs frequently use simplified versions, so — again — the legend governs, but these are the recurring marks.

Are RCP symbols actually standardized?
Partially, and it is worth knowing which parts. For electrical devices, the reference is IEEE/ANSI Y32.9-1972, Graphic Symbols for Electrical Wiring and Layout Diagrams Used in Architecture and Building Construction — approved in 1972 and reaffirmed in 1989, which tells you how slowly this vocabulary changes. For fire safety devices, NFPA 170 is actively maintained, with a 2024 edition current as of this writing (verified July 30, 2026). For everything else — ceiling tags, hatches, drafting conventions — the closest thing to an umbrella is the United States National CAD Standard (NCS, currently version 6), whose symbols module organizes symbol and hatch conventions using MasterFormat categories.
None of these documents is enforced on a typical interiors or residential project. What actually happens: each office's CAD or Revit template ships with a symbol library descended from these standards, mutated by decades of in-house preference. That is why the legend block exists, and why reading it is step one of reading any RCP — including plans produced by software templates, which inherit whatever conventions their maker chose.

- Revit users rarely need third-party blocks at all — lighting fixture, mechanical, and annotation families ship with the software and place their own symbols on ceiling plans.
- EdrawMax publishes a large symbol gallery with one-line definitions; useful as a visual cross-check, but roughly a third of the page is product promotion for its diagramming software.
Choose those if your problem is drafting speed. Choose a written reference — this one — if your problem is standing in front of a drawing and needing to know what the circle with four tick marks means.
Common questions
What does RCP stand for, and why is it called 'reflected'?
RCP stands for reflected ceiling plan. It is drawn as if the floor were a mirror reflecting the ceiling back at you, which keeps the ceiling in the same left-right orientation as the floor plan — a light fixture on the plan's right is on your right when you stand in the room. A direct view up at the ceiling would mirror-flip everything and make coordination with the floor plan maddening.
What is the difference between a reflected ceiling plan and a floor plan?
A floor plan cuts the building horizontally about 4 feet above the floor and looks down at walls, doors, and furniture. An RCP uses the same footprint and orientation but shows what is overhead: light fixtures, ceiling materials and heights, diffusers, and life safety devices. Splitting them exists mostly to keep the floor plan legible — overhead information would bury it.
Are reflected ceiling plan symbols standardized?
Only partially. IEEE/ANSI Y32.9 covers electrical layout symbols, NFPA 170 (2024 edition) covers fire safety symbols, and the U.S. National CAD Standard includes a symbols module — but none is mandatory on typical projects, and office templates diverge freely. The legend printed on the sheet is always the controlling reference.
Do wall sconces and under-cabinet lights really belong on a ceiling plan?
Yes, by convention. Anything switched with the lighting appears on the RCP so switching and circuiting read in one place. Wall-mounted fixtures are drawn tight to the wall line with a mounting height note, and fixtures below the ceiling plane — under-cabinet strips, cove fixtures hidden behind a lip — are drawn dashed to signal they are not actually at the ceiling surface.
Where can I download RCP symbols as DWG or CAD blocks?
Draftsperson.net hosts a free DWG legend (Australian conventions, free for commercial use); ArchBlocks sells a paid starter library; Revit includes fixture and annotation families natively. If you use downloaded blocks, still build a legend on your sheet — the blocks only mean what your legend says they mean.
